Frontier Student Rotations

Bessemer

Rotating in Bessemer provides students with the opportunity to work with a very diverse patient population. Our Bessemer clinic is located directly in front of the UAB Medical West hospital. In addition to shadowing in primary care clinics, students rotating in Bessemer have the opportunity to work in OB clinic and round at Medical West labor & delivery, as well as work with attendings during suboxone groups. Students rotating in Bessemer are also encouraged to join our residents for didactics on Thursday afternoons.

Marion

Marion is a historic Alabama city, a culturally important site in the history of Civil Rights in the country and houses one of our most geographically remote clinics. Rotating there gives an authentic view of what it is like to make decisions for patients knowing that “back up” is farther away than at other sites. This level of independence in outpatient care affects our algorithms for acute care as well as how we judiciously utilize specialist referrals.

Students rotating in Marion are welcome to stay overnight in our student house. The house is just minutes away from the clinic, and downtown Marion, to give students the chance to fully immerse themselves in the culture and community of Marion, AL.

The student house has 4 private bedrooms, two full bathrooms, a full size kitchen with appliances, and WiFi. Each bedroom has a code on the door for privacy, as well as a desk for students to work should they not want to do so in the shared spaces.
