Cahaba Family Medicine
Sports & Exercise Medicine Fellowship

Program information

We are pleased to announce the opening of the Sports and Exercise Medicine Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), the flagship healthcare system and medical school of the state of Alabama and among the top 40 medical campuses in the US according to U.S. News and World Report.

While the curricular location of the SM Fellowship is the UAB campus, the Family Medicine Residency “home” for the program is the Cahaba-UAB Family Medicine Residency, a 12-12-12 mission-driven, FQHC-based Teaching Health Center, with rural and urban tracks, part of a growing primary care academic consortium with the UAB School of Medicine and the Department of Family and Community Medicine.

The aim of the Sports and Exercise Medicine Fellowship is to train, develop, and motivate our fellows to become leaders within the field of primary care sports and exercise medicine. To adjust to the ever growing scope of practice our fellows face, we have expanded the duration of training to 2 years. Our curriculum maintains the traditional orthopedic clinical exposures, while also increasing education and experience in exercise and nutritional medicine, as well as extensive, hands-on training and expertise in diagnostic and procedural musculoskeletal ultrasound.  By doing so our fellows will qualify to graduate with BOTH a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine (CAQSM), and a Master of Science (MS) in Nutrition and Kinesiology. This innovative training methodology will prove invaluable for future graduates as the demand for expertise in this field continues to grow.

In terms of athletics, the Sports Medicine Fellows are an integral part of an NCAA Division 1 athletic program and provide coverage for UAB athletics, including football and basketball. Fellows also work with high risk club sports teams and adopt a high school football team for their two year tenure. Additionally, fellows have opportunities to provide coverage for local professional and semi-professional teams as well as collegiate, high school and youth sports teams.
